How to Care for Your Colombian Faja: The Complete Guide

A high-quality Colombian faja is an investment — in your recovery, your comfort, and your results. But like any precision garment, it requires proper care to maintain its compression, shape, and longevity. Whether you're wearing your faja post-surgery or for everyday body contouring, this guide will help you get the most out of every wear.

Why Proper Faja Care Matters

Colombian fajas are engineered with specialized elastic fibers, medical-grade compression panels, and moisture-wicking fabrics. Improper washing or storage can:

  • Break down the elastic fibers, reducing compression effectiveness
  • Cause the garment to lose its shape and sculpting ability
  • Shorten the lifespan of your faja significantly
  • Irritate sensitive post-op skin if residue from harsh detergents remains

The good news? Caring for your faja is simple once you know the rules.

How to Wash Your Colombian Faja

Hand Washing (Recommended)

Hand washing is the gentlest and most effective method for preserving your faja's compression and structure:

  1. Fill a basin or sink with cool or lukewarm water — never hot
  2. Add a small amount of mild, fragrance-free detergent or a detergent formulated for delicates
  3. Submerge your faja and gently agitate the water — do not scrub or wring
  4. Pay extra attention to areas that contact skin directly (inner panels, crotch area)
  5. Rinse thoroughly with cool water until all soap is removed
  6. Gently press (don't wring) excess water out

Machine Washing (If Necessary)

If you must machine wash your faja:

  • Use a mesh laundry bag to protect hooks, zippers, and fabric
  • Select the delicate or gentle cycle with cold water
  • Use a mild detergent — avoid fabric softeners, bleach, or harsh chemicals
  • Wash with similar colors only

How to Dry Your Faja

Always air dry your faja — never use a dryer. Heat is the enemy of compression garments. Even a single dryer cycle can permanently damage the elastic fibers and reduce the garment's effectiveness.

  • Lay flat on a clean towel or hang to dry in a well-ventilated area
  • Keep out of direct sunlight, which can fade fabric and degrade elastics over time
  • Do not hang by the straps if your faja has delicate shoulder straps — lay flat instead
  • Allow to dry completely before wearing again

How Often Should You Wash Your Faja?

During post-op recovery, you should wash your faja every 1–2 days. This is why we always recommend having at least two fajas — so you can wear one while the other dries.

For everyday shapewear use, washing after each wear is ideal, especially in warm weather or after physical activity.

Storing Your Faja

  • Store flat or loosely folded — avoid compressing it tightly for long periods
  • Keep in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight
  • Do not store with sharp objects that could snag the fabric
  • If your faja has hooks, fasten them before storing to prevent snagging

Signs It's Time to Replace Your Faja

Even with perfect care, fajas have a lifespan. Watch for these signs that it's time for a new one:

  • Reduced compression — the garment feels looser than when you first wore it
  • Visible fabric wear — pilling, thinning, or stretched-out panels
  • Hooks or closures that no longer hold securely
  • Persistent odor that doesn't wash out
  • Loss of shape — the garment no longer conforms to your body the way it should

For post-op patients, most surgeons recommend replacing your Stage 1 faja after 4–6 weeks and transitioning to a fresh Stage 2 garment. For everyday use, a quality faja typically lasts 6–12 months with proper care.

Faja Care Don'ts

  • Don't use bleach — it destroys elastic fibers
  • Don't use fabric softener — it coats fibers and reduces compression
  • Don't iron your faja — heat damages the compression panels
  • Don't dry clean — the chemicals can damage specialized fabrics
  • Don't wring or twist — this distorts the shape and stresses seams
